Class Philosophy:

In the 21st century, the composing/writing of music is inextricably linked to the recording/production of it. Gone are the days where you needed to write your composition down on paper, find people to play it, pay a recording studio to record it, edit it, and then find a label to circulate and promote it. With the incredible technological advances made in the past 20-30 years, you can now do that all from the comfort of your own home, with very little gear. This change in the availability of tools and technology has not only changed the way music sounds but also the way artists create it.

This is where we come in. We have designed a practical, DIY based class that cuts out all of the fat of traditional songwriting, recording, and production classes. We will not spend months learning about different forms of classical music before we start writing. We will not spend months on the history of recording and the specifics of multi-band equalizers before hitting the record button. This is a class that gets you moving on day one – in an activity-based, learn-as-you-go method.

Class Format

This class is an 8-week program that consists of weekly 1 hr classes conducted on zoom. You can do it in your P.J.s from anywhere in the world. Each week the class is divided into 2 parts.

Part 1 is the technical part in which you learn a few skills about actually recording on the app, with in-class activities to help make sure you have it down while our expert instructors are available to field questions and help.

The 2nd part is a writing/composing related section in which you will learn basic songwriting principles; skills that compound and grow each week until your compositions become more and more mature. Each class is accompanied by an at-home activity that combines the technical skill learned earlier in class, with the creative skill learned in the latter part of the class.

Finally, you will send your weekly compositions to your teacher for feedback, and grow a little bit with each assignment. By the end, you will be creating amazing, full sounding pieces of music that you won’t believe you created YOURSELF!

Results

After completing this class, you will have the skills and confidence to make your own music on not only Soundtrap, but any of the most popular recording programs such as GarageBand, Logic, Protools, Cubase, Ableton, Reaper, and more.

You will also have the experience of 8 compositions already under your belt, and the practical knowledge needed to get you moving forward with your music-making and a basic understanding of writing and recording principles that will allow you to then move in a more advanced direction.

Fun Fact -When designing this class, we asked ourselves, “What does a no bs, practical and straight to the point recording/writing class look like?”
